Chicago came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 8th inning scoring 3 runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Ernie Banks got things rolling when he drew a walk. Dale Long followed and he lashed a single. Walt Moryn then doubled bringing in a run. Eddie Haas was up next and he smacked a single which accounted for two additional runs. Chicago rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon. Dave Hillman(6-11) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 3 innings. Turk Lown earned his 6th save. Larry Jackson(10-9) absorbed the loss in relief. He gave up 4 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings of work. Covington made sure the Milwaukee fans enjoyed themselves. He doubled in the 2nd inning, laced a single in the 4th inning and launched a Grand Slam homerun (his 22nd of the season) in the 5th inning. Milwaukee banged out 12 on the afternoon. Buhl(19-9) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Jay Hook(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings. The score was tied at 6 after nine. New York came out on top in the 11th inning. Ray Katt doubled. After an out was recorded, Don Mueller stepped up to the plate and he delivered a single. Willie Mays then slapped a base-hit giving New York the victory and sending the 6,157 home-town fans home happy. For the game New York out-hit Pittsburgh 15 to 10. The winning pitcher was Mike McCormick(6-1) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Bob Purkey(6-18) was the loser in relief. He pitched 4 innings giving up 6 hits and no walks.
