The game was won by St. Louis with a run in the 9th inning. Tom Alston reached on an error. Hal R. Smith stepped up to the plate and he doubled giving St. Louis the victory and sending the 15,136 home-town fans home happy. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th inning. Lloyd Merritt(5-4) was the winner allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Dick Littlefield(4-4) was given the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a batter giving up 1 hit and no walks. Gino Cimoli came to the plate and drew a walk. Elmer Valo then laced a single knocking in a run. Valo took second on the throw. Gil Hodges stepped in and he doubled driving home another two teammates. That early scoring held up. Rene Valdez(1-0) was helped out by Ed Roebuck who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 15th save. Don Cardwell(6-10) was the losing pitcher. 'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Valdez said.
