St. Louis jumped out to the early lead in the first inning as they scored 4 runs on 4 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. St. Louis ended up with 10 hits for the game while Chicago had 3. The victory went to Lynn Lovenguth(1-0) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Lovenguth was helped out by Billy Muffett who recorded his 3rd save. Dick Drott(9-16) was the losing pitcher. He hit a bases-empty home run in the 2nd inning, blasted a two-run home run in the 4th inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 38th of the season) in the 6th inning. Cincinnati threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Lew Burdette(12-14) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 5 runs for the win. Don McMahon recorded his 8th save. The loss was charged to Charlie Rabe(0-1). He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 innings of work.
