New York tallied 3 runs in the 4th inning with the help of 3 hits. They ended up being the winning runs. St. Louis threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. The victory went to Ruben Gomez(16-14) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Marv Grissom earned the save, his 16th. Larry Jackson(9-8) was the losing pitcher. Turk Farrell was credited with his 7th save. Joe Nuxhall(14-7) took the loss. He was unable to control the Philadelphia offense and allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. Pittsburgh came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 4 hits. Bill Virdon led off and he slapped a single. After an out was recorded, Bob Skinner stepped in and he banged out a single resulting in a run. Frank Thomas then laced a base-hit. After another out, Gene Freese stepped up to the plate and he hit a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. The Chicago batters went down meekly in the bottom of the 9th. The win went to Bob Purkey(6-16) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Don Elston(4-12) was the loser. He was knocked around by Pittsburgh, allowing 13 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. After the game, it took a long while before Bob Scheffing emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this afternoon, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the Pittsburgh locker room.' Smith(3-0) was very good in the win. He surrendered only 8 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 4.72 to 3.74. Chicago made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Moe Drabowsky(16-7) was given the loss. He was stingy with the baserunners, allowing just 2 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings. 'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Smith said, 'this was one of those times.'

The score was 9 to 2. Brooklyn started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first scoring a single run on 2 hits. Jim Gilliam doubled. Pee Wee Reese followed and he delivered a one-base hit. Duke Snider then grounded into a double play scoring the run. The Brooklyn offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings. The win was credited to Don Drysdale(15-7) who went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 1 run. Gene Conley(10-7) was the loser. He had trouble throwing strikes and issued 9 walks in 6 innings.
