Mathews enjoyed a great evening at the plate. He popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 1st inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 3rd inning and smacked a three-run homer (his 31st of the season) in the 7th inning. Milwaukee had 9 hits for the night. Spahn(16-9) was the winner allowing 5 runs for the game. Bud Podbielan(0-1) was tagged with the loss. 'I didn't feel that good when I came to the park tonight,' Mathews said. 'I'm glad I decided to play!' PITTSBURGH AT PHILADELPHIA Pirates......... 4 0 1 2 0 0 0 0 3 - 10 11 1 Phillies........ 0 0 1 0 0 1 0 1 0 - 3 8 1 Win:Law(8-10) Loss:Sanford(9-13) Homeruns- D.Groat(8th), G.Freese(3rd), R.Repulski(19th) Vern Law was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game and shortstop Dick Groat jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the pitiful Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 10 to 3 at Connie Mack Stadium. Pittsburgh started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits. That was all the runs Law(8-10) needed. Pittsburgh totaled 11 on the night. Jack Sanford(9-13) absorbed the loss. He pitched 7 innings allowing 7 hits and 4 walks. ST. LOUIS AT CHICAGO Cardinals....... 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 - 2 4 1 Cubs............ 0 0 1 3 1 2 1 3 - 11 19 1 Win:Drabowsky(14-6) Loss:Mizell(6-9) Homeruns- W.Cooper(3rd), D.Long(23rd) Moe Drabowsky tossed a complete game and Walt Moryn had 4 hits at Wrigley Field as the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11 to 2. Vinegar Bend Mizell(6-9) took the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 14 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. NEW YORK AT BROOKLYN Giants.......... 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 4 0 Dodgers......... 0 0 3 0 0 2 0 0 - 5 9 0 Win:Drysdale(13-6) Loss:Gomez(15-14) Homeruns- W.Mays(26th) Don Drysdale went 9 strong innings at Ebbets Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the New York Giants by the count of 5 to 1.
