CINCINNATI AT PHILADELPHIA Redlegs......... 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 4 - 6 14 0 Phillies........ 3 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 - 5 6 1 Win:Lawrence(10-8) Loss:Farrell(1-5) Save:Freeman(10th) Homeruns- F.Robinson(28th), H.Anderson(7th) In a dramatic ending the Cincinnati Redlegs staged a comeback and held on to win over the lifeless Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 6 to 5. Cincinnati won the game with a rally in the 9th inning when they scored 4 runs on 5 hits. The big moment was provided by Bob Thurman who silenced the stadium when he tripled bringing in two baserunners. For the game Cincinnati out-hit Philadelphia 14 to 6. Brooks Lawrence(10-8) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 5 runs. Lawrence got relief help from Hersh Freeman who gained credit for his 10th save. Turk Farrell(1-5) took the loss in relief. Mayo Smith was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss. He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse, yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose. Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us tonight' MILWAUKEE AT NEW YORK Braves.......... 0 0 1 1 1 1 0 0 0 - 4 9 2 Giants.......... 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 3 6 1 Win:Conley(9-5) Loss:Barclay(7-11) Save:McMahon(7th) Homeruns- R.Schoendienst(19th), H.Aaron(26th), W.Covington(17th) The phenomenal Milwaukee Braves nipped the New York Giants 4 to 3 at Polo Grounds in a hard fought contest. In the 6th inning Milwaukee scored 1 run. New York had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. The victory went to Gene Conley(9-5) who went 8 innings, allowing 3 runs. Don McMahon earned the save, his 7th. Curt Barclay(7-11) was hit with the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 6 innings of work. ST. Pittsburgh had the game winning rally in the 9th inning when they tallied 5 runs on 7 hits. The big moment was provided by Hardy Peterson who excited the crowd when he lined a base-hit scoring two baserunners. Pittsburgh had 14 hits for the night while St. Louis had 9. The victory was credited to Luis Arroyo(7-3) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Hoyt Wilhelm(1-3) suffered the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 3 hits without retiring a batter. 'That was exciting!,' Gene Freese said. 'I would have paid money to watch this one.'
