Cincinnati took the lead for keeps in the 4th inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. George Crowe got things going when he banged out a single. After an out was recorded, Smoky Burgess stepped up to the plate and he smashed a two-run homer (his 9th of the season). Cincinnati finished with 11 hits while Philadelphia ended up with 8. Joe Nuxhall(12-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 2/3 innings and allowing 4 runs. The losing pitcher was Don Cardwell(5-7). He was knocked around by Cincinnati, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. The deciding run was scored by New York in the 9th. After an out was recorded, Daryl Spencer stroked a base-hit. Whitey Lockman came next and he stroked a one-base hit, and an error was also committed, making New York the winners and sending the 7,923 fans home happy. New York totaled 7 on the night. The winning pitcher was Worthington(7-5) who allowed 2 runs for the game. Lew Burdette(9-12) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 3 runs and 7 hits in 8 and 1/3 innings. With this win, New York has a 63-66 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With this loss, Milwaukee has a 5-5 record of late, 75-49 overall. ST. St. Louis claimed the early lead in the first inning when they blasted Pittsburgh for 7 runs on 5 hits. That early scoring was all that McDaniel needed. St. Louis out-hit Pittsburgh for the game, 16 hits to 6. Bob Friend(10-14) took the loss. He surrendered 4 hits and 2 walks in 2/3 of an inning. Drott(7-11) was simply too much for the Brooklyn batters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 2 hits and 6 walks in 9 innings. Drott whiffed an impressive total of 12 Brooklyn batters lowering his ERA from 4.58 to 4.36. The right-handed Drott lost his chance for a no-hitter when Don Newcombe singled with nobody out in the 6th inning. Chicago totaled 7 on the night. Newcombe(13-8) was the losing pitcher. Walter Alston was impressed with Drott and his 12 strikeouts. 'It's tough to generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'
