In the bottom of the 6th inning St. Louis scored 3 runs. The key at-bat was by Ennis who made the St. Louis fans a happy lot when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 20th of the season). New York threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Sam Jones(10-5) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Hoyt Wilhelm got the save, his 10th. Johnny Antonelli(7-8) absorbed the loss. 'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Bill Rigney 'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.' Simmons(9-10) pitched a solid game. He went 9 innings allowing 12 hits and no walks. Despite losing, Cincinnati out-hit Philadelphia 12 to 9. Brooks Lawrence(9-5) suffered the loss. He surrendered 6 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings. The Chicago Cubs topped the Brooklyn Dodgers by the slimmest of margins, 7 to 6. The game was deadlocked at 6 after nine full innings. Chicago came out on top in the 11th inning. After two were out Lee Walls cracked a solo homerun (his 6th of the season) resulting in an exciting win for Chicago and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times. The winning pitcher was Turk Lown(5-3) who allowed 3 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. Carl Erskine(2-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. Chicago now has a record of 43-56. With the loss Brooklyn now has a record of 55-45.
