The St. Louis fans didn't appreciate the big day Sauer had. He ripped a base-knock in the 2nd inning, belted a three-run homer (his 15th of the season) in the 4th inning, doubled in the 6th inning and slapped a one-base hit in the 8th inning. New York had 19 hits overall, while St. Louis had 10. Ray Crone(7-7) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. Crone was helped out by Ray Monzant who recorded his 1st save. Herm Wehmeier(4-5) was the loser. His ERA increased from 3.38 to 4.04 as he allowed 8 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings. The score was 9 to 3. Vicente Amor(1-0) labored throughout the game but hung around to record a victory. He gave up 3 runs, 12 hits and no walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. Cincinnati finished with 12 hits in the victory. Tom Acker earned his 5th save. Harvey Haddix(5-10) was given the loss. He gave up 6 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings of work. Bob Buhl(13-7) had a solid outing for Milwaukee. He went 7 and 2/3 innings surrendering 8 hits and 2 walks. Pittsburgh proved to be no trouble in the 9th. Ernie Johnson earned the save, his 9th. Bob Purkey(4-13) took the loss. He was unable to control the Milwaukee offense and allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. 'He gutted it out' Fred Haney said of Buhl. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.' Chicago was unable to recover after Brooklyn went ahead in the top of the 3rd inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits. Roy Campanella doubled. After an out was recorded, Gilliam stepped up to the plate and he slapped a single scoring the run. Brooklyn took care of Chicago with no trouble in the bottom of the 9th. Drysdale(10-5) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs. Bob Rush(6-11) ended up with the loss. 'He was moving it around and spotting it very well.' Bob Scheffing said. Drysdale pitched a great game. He deserves all the credit.'
