The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Milwaukee won the game in the 10th inning. After two outs Mathews ripped a solo home run (his 22nd of the season) giving Milwaukee the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. The game was a scoreless duel until the 8th inning. The winning pitcher was Ernie Johnson(8-1) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Marv Grissom(4-3) was tagged with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 1 hit and no walks. Milwaukee now has a record of a league leading 57-38. The loss by New York interrupted a nice 8-2 recent run. Hacker(5-3) simply dominated Chicago. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 3 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 2.86 to 2.50. Philadelphia had only 6 hits for the afternoon. St. Louis scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning as they scored 4 runs on 3 base hits. The key at-bat was by Del Ennis who brought the crowd to their feet when he brought the hometown folks to their feet with a Grand Slammer (his 17th of the season). Pittsburgh was out-hit by St. Louis, 13 hits to 10. The victory went to Lloyd Merritt(4-2) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. The losing pitcher was Nellie King(3-7) in relief. He was touched for 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings. 'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Musial noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!'
