The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. New York won it in the 12th inning. The crucial at-bat was provided by Willie Mays who silenced Wrigley Field as he belted a three-run homer (his 18th of the season). Overall New York out-hit Chicago 13 to 9. Al Worthington(5-4) went 3 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Dick Littlefield(3-2) took the loss in relief. He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs in 3 innings. Milwaukee came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning with 2 runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Spahn kicked off the action when he doubled. Red Schoendienst stepped into the batter's box and he stroked a one-base hit. Spahn then suprised everyone by stealing home. Frank Torre was up next and he worked the squeeze play to perfection scoring the final run of the inning. Milwaukee rapped out 7 hits for the afternoon. The victory was credited to Spahn(11-7) who went the distance, allowing 1 run. Robin Roberts(6-13) was the losing pitcher. Robinson had a big evening at the plate. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 3rd inning and lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 19th of the season) in the 8th inning. Cincinnati banged out 14 on the night. Fowler(4-4) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 3 runs. Ron Kline(6-11) was charged with the loss. He served up 4 homeruns in his 6 innings. The winning run, and the only run, was scored by St. Louis in the 5th inning. After an out was recorded, Hobie Landrith reached on an error. One out later, Wehmeier stepped up to the plate and he laced a one-base hit scoring the run. Wehmeier took second on the throw. St. Louis managed only 6 on the night. Wehmeier(4-4) was credited with the shutout. Don Newcombe(10-6) was the losing pitcher. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 8 innings of work. 'He had his 'A' game tonight,' Fred Hutchinson said of Wehmeier. 'Very impressive performance.'
