New York jumped out to the early lead in the first inning with 3 runs using 2 hits. Whitey Lockman led off and keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Danny O'Connell stepped up to the plate and he stroked a one-base hit. Mays then doubled knocking in a run. Bobby Thomson was up next and he would ground out plating one more runner. Daryl Spencer stepped into the box and would ground out scoring the final run of the inning. New York had a total of 10 hits for the game. Ray Monzant(1-0) allowed 3 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Monzant got help from Marv Grissom who earned his 13th save. Dick Drott(5-7) absorbed the loss. Buhl(11-7) had a solid outing for Milwaukee. He went 9 innings surrendering 7 hits and 4 walks. Philadelphia had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Curt Simmons(7-10) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 5 runs and 11 hits in 8 innings. Frank Thomas led the offense for Pittsburgh. He laced a base-hit scoring a run in the 6th inning, blasted a two-run home run (his 17th of the season) in the 7th inning and banged out a single in the 9th inning. Pittsburgh finished with 18 hits in the victory. Law(5-8) got the victory, allowing 5 runs for the game. The losing pitcher was Johnny Klippstein(10-4). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. Pittsburgh now has a record of 39-54. With the loss, the Cincinnati ballclub's record is 54-38. BROOKLYN AT ST. Podres(8-3) pitched well for Brooklyn in their victory. He went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 6 hits and no walks. The left-handed Podres lost his no-hit bid when Don Blasingame singled with nobody out in the 7th inning. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th inning. Podres got help from Clem Labine who earned his 15th save. Sam Jones(9-5) was hit with the loss. He allowed 9 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.
