Cincinnati jumped on top of Philadelphia in the top of the 4th inning scoring a single run on 2 hits. Philadelphia had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. The winning pitcher was Brooks Lawrence(9-4) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings. Hersh Freeman recorded the save, his 8th. The loss was charged to Robin Roberts(6-12). Cincinnati lost it in the 5th inning when Philadelphia did all their damage when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Marv Blaylock who made the crowd happy when he smashed a two-run homer (his 3rd of the season). Cincinnati made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Haddix(4-9) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 3 runs. Art Fowler(3-4) was given the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. Birdie Tebbetts was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!' Crone(6-6) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.95 to 3.66. New York banged out 8 on the afternoon. Warren Spahn(10-7) took the loss. He gave up 9 runs in 8 innings of work. Mathews had a big day with his bat. He blasted a two-run home run in the 1st inning, lined a base-hit bringing in a run in the 4th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 20th of the season) in the 8th inning. Milwaukee had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings. Burdette(7-8) lasted until the end allowing 5 runs for the win. Curt Barclay(4-7) was the losing pitcher. He served up 4 gopher balls in 4 and 1/3 innings.

St. Louis bats came alive with a big top of the 8th inning as they showed no mercy on Pittsburgh blasting them for 8 hits and plating 8 runs. The big moment was provided by Wally Moon who deflated the crowd as he delivered a base-hit which was good for two runs. Pittsburgh was out-hit by St. Louis, 18 hits to 10. Herm Wehmeier(3-4) went 7 innings allowing 6 runs for the victory. Nellie King(3-5) was charged with the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and surrendered 8 hits and 2 walks. ST. St. Louis lit up the scoreboard in the 1st inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 5 hits. Overall St. Louis out-hit Pittsburgh 20 to 6. The losing pitcher was Bob Purkey(4-11). His ERA increased from 4.31 to 4.80 as he allowed 6 runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. The St. Louis ballclub's record now stands at 45-44. With the loss, the Pittsburgh ballclub's record is 38-54.
