The Pittsburgh Pirates won by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4. The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Pittsburgh ended up winning it in the 16th inning. Bill Virdon doubled. After an out was recorded, Bill Mazeroski stepped in and he stroked a single making Pittsburgh victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Despite losing, Chicago out-hit Pittsburgh 14 to 10. Luis Arroyo(5-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing no runs. Jim Brosnan(2-2) suffered the loss in relief. Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. New York came out on top in the 10th inning. Willie Mays lined a single. Bobby Thomson next to the plate and he tripled giving New York the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. New York finished with 12 hits in the victory. Marv Grissom(4-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Hersh Freeman(1-2) was given the loss in relief. The New York ballclub's record now stands at 40-46. With this loss, Cincinnati has a 5-5 record of late, 52-34 overall. Aaron provided the offensive punch. He cracked a solo homerun in the 4th inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 18th of the season) in the 6th inning. Milwaukee managed 15 in their victory. It was the 3rd shutout of the year for Burdette(6-8). Robin Roberts(6-11) was the loser. He served up 3 gopher balls in 3 and 2/3 innings. Fred Haney was very impressed with his pitcher, Burdette, 'He had unusually good pitch placement tonight. It was almost unfair - but a beautiful game to watch from where I sat' ST. Dark was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He slapped a one-base hit in the 1st inning, tripled knocking in a run in the 5th inning and smashed a two-run homer (his 4th of the season) in the 7th inning. St. Louis had 15 hits for the night. The victory was credited to Jones(9-4) who went the distance, allowing 4 runs. The loss was charged to Don Newcombe(10-5). He allowed St. Louis 7 runs in 6 innings of work.
