Pittsburgh was unable to recover after Chicago went ahead in the 6th inning when they tallied 2 runs on 4 hits. The Chicago offense man-handled the Pittsburgh pitching staff as they scored in 7 of the 9 innings. Rush(6-9), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Bob Friend(9-8) was given the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 13 hits and 6 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. Cincinnati won the game with a rally in the top of the 8th inning scoring 2 runs using 2 hits. Ted Kluszewski led off and he banged out a single. Two outs later Bob Thurman stepped up to the plate and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 11th of the season). New York made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. The victory went to Hal Jeffcoat(7-5) who went 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing 6 runs. Raul Sanchez earned his 6th save. The loss was charged to Ruben Gomez(10-11). He served up 3 homeruns in his 8 innings. 'You have to give New York credit, they fought us tough to the end' Birdie Tebbetts said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out the victory.' Repulski provided much of the offense. He blasted a two-run home run in the 1st inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 10th of the season) in the 7th inning. Milwaukee had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. The winning pitcher was Harvey Haddix(3-9) who allowed 3 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Bob Miller gained credit for his 4th save. Warren Spahn(10-6) was charged with the loss. Mayo Smith was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.' ST. Brooklyn tallied 3 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 3 hits. The highlight belonged to Cimoli who came through for the home fans when he doubled emptying the bases. Both teams totaled 8 on the night. Carl Erskine(2-0) allowed no runs in 3 innings, and picked up the victory. Lindy McDaniel(4-9) took the loss. The Brooklyn ballclub's record now stands at 48-34. With the loss, St. Louis has a record of 7-3 lately, 41-42 overall.
