It was a good day for New York thanks to Thomson. He emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun in the 3rd inning and delivered a solo blast (his 9th of the season) in the 8th inning. Chicago had 10 hits in the game while New York had 6, but New York had the more timely hits. Ray Crone(5-6) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Crone was helped out by Marv Grissom who recorded his 11th save. Dave Hillman(3-4) was given the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 6 innings of work. 'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed. Man alive, things were getting awfully grim,' noted Bill Rigney. 'Now, we need to string a bunch of wins together and turn things around!' Cincinnati was unable to recover after Pittsburgh went ahead in the 7th inning with 2 runs using 3 hits. Frank Thomas led off and started the attack as he banged out a single, and an error was also committed. Bob Skinner stepped up to the plate and he slapped a single. Skinner got a good lead and stole second. Bill Mazeroski came up and he slapped a base-hit scoring two baserunners. Pittsburgh had 7 hits for the afternoon. The win was credited to Swanson(4-1) who went the whole way allowing 1 run. Art Fowler(3-3) was hit with the loss. 'All of my pitches were working today,' Swanson said. 'I felt really good out there, and heck, I think I could have gone longer.'
