Hank Sauer was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He slapped a one-base hit in the 1st inning, belted a three-run homer (his 12th of the season) in the 4th inning and stroked a single bringing in a run in the 6th inning. Cincinnati had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Ruben Gomez(9-7) allowed 8 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Marv Grissom earned the save, his 9th. The loss was charged to Joe Nuxhall(6-3). He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 7 innings of work. PHILADELPHIA AT ST. St. Louis was unable to recover after Philadelphia went ahead in the 7th inning scoring one runner using 2 hits. Despite losing, St. Louis out-hit Philadelphia 12 to 9. Simmons(7-5) was the winner allowing 3 runs for the game. Lindy McDaniel(2-8) took the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 9 hits in 9 innings. Long had a big day at the plate. He lashed a single bringing in two baserunners in the 1st inning, doubled plating a run in the 3rd inning and smashed a two-run homer (his 8th of the season) in the 8th inning. Chicago lit up the scoreboard in the 3rd inning which saw them plate 10 runs on 6 hits. For the game Chicago out-hit Pittsburgh 13 to 10. The victory went to Tom Poholsky(1-2) who went 8 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Vern Law(2-6) absorbed the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 8 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.
