NEW YORK AT CHICAGO Giants.......... 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 8 0 Cubs............ 0 2 0 2 0 0 0 1 - 5 11 0 Win:Rush(4-7) Loss:Crone(4-4) Homeruns- D.Spencer(2nd), W.Moryn-2(7th), D.Long(7th) Walt Moryn smashed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Bob Rush pitched a complete game as the Chicago Cubs defeated the New York Giants 5 to 1 at Wrigley Field. The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Moryn. He smashed a two-run homer in the 2nd inning, lined a single in the 6th inning and blasted a solo shot (his 7th of the season) in the 8th inning. Chicago finished with 11 hits in the victory. The victory was credited to Rush(4-7) who went the distance, allowing 1 run. Ray Crone(4-4) absorbed the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 7 and 2/3 innings. Milwaukee scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 3 hits. Eddie Mathews led off and he laced a single. After another out, Andy Pafko was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Johnny Logan then delivered a single. Joe Adcock came up and he doubled resulting in a mighty exciting win for Milwaukee and the 38,315 home town fans in attendance. Milwaukee managed only 6 on the night. Ernie Johnson(3-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. The losing pitcher was Curt Simmons(6-5). He pitched 8 and 2/3 innings giving up 6 hits and 3 walks. 'What a game!,' Johnson said afterward. 'When we won it I almost couldn't believe it!' Pittsburgh took the lead off Joe Nuxhall in the first inning when they scored 4 runs on 5 hits. The key at-bat was by Frank Thomas who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he cracked a two-run shot (his 11th of the season). Pittsburgh had a total of 12 hits for the game. Friend(6-7) got the victory, allowing 4 runs for the game. Nuxhall(6-2) was given the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings. BROOKLYN AT ST. St. Louis scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Don Blasingame smacked a single. Two outs later Del Ennis came up and he lined a base-hit making St. Louis the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. St. Louis totaled 11 on the night. McDaniel(1-0) was credited with the shutout. Danny McDevitt(0-2) was the loser. He was unable to control the St. Louis offense and allowed 11 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. McDaniel was obviously very pleased with his performance in the aftermath of the game, 'It was just one of those games where everything worked. My arm felt great, heck, I could have pitched another two or three innings. I only hope that I can do it again next time out!'
