The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. New York won the game in the 10th inning. Willie Mays led off and he doubled. Thomson stepped up next and he delivered a single scoring a run. After an out was recorded, Daryl Spencer came to the plate and stroked a single. Dave Jolly then unleashed a wild pitch. Andre Rodgers stepped into the box and was walked intentionally to load the bases. Wes Westrum added his contribution to the rally and delivered a one-base hit driving home another two teammates. Chicago erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 2 hits. Chuck Tanner led off the inning for Chicago when he laced a single, and an error was also committed. Ernie Banks stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Walt Moryn then smacked a single, and an error was also committed, making Chicago the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. The game was a scoreless duel until the 8th inning. Turk Lown(4-2) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Don Cardwell(5-4) ended up with the loss. Bob Scheffing was all smiles after the ballgame, 'It sure was looking pretty dim there for a while, but our guys never gave up - and neither did our fans - they kept cheering us on. Jones(7-1) gave St. Louis a solid outing. He didn't allow much, just 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.55 to 3.11. Pittsburgh had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Ron Kline(5-8) was the loser. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 7 innings of work. 'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Bobby Bragan 'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.'

Purkey(4-7) dominated St. Louis hitters. He allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.00 to 3.50. Pittsburgh finished with 12 hits in the victory. Lindy McDaniel(2-7) was given the loss. He was unable to control the Pittsburgh offense and allowed 12 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings. 'Purkey pitched a gem of a game', Fred Hutchinson recounted. 'He kept our batters off balance the entire game.'
