New York came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning when they tallied 4 runs on 4 hits. The highlight belonged to Daryl Spencer who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he tripled plating three runs. New York managed only 5 on the night. Mike McCormick(4-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Marv Grissom recorded his 7th save. The losing pitcher was Warren Spahn(7-4). He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 3 hits and 4 walks. After the game, it took a long while before Fred Haney emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the New York locker room.'
