In the 3rd inning Chicago went on top for good scoring a single run. Chicago rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon. Dave Hillman(2-2) went 6 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Hillman was helped out by Dick Littlefield who recorded his 1st save. Pete Burnside(0-7) was the losing pitcher. Cincinnati jumped on top to stay in the 2nd inning when they tallied 2 runs on 3 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Alex Grammas who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he lined a base-hit which was good for two runs. Cincinnati totaled 12 on the afternoon. The victory went to Jeffcoat(6-3) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Bob Friend(5-6) took the loss. He allowed 8 runs and 12 hits in 9 innings. ST. Sanford(5-4) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the St. Louis batters. He allowed only 3 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.44 to 3.06. Philadelphia had only 4 hits for the game. Vinegar Bend Mizell(2-4) was hit with the loss. 'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said Sanford. 'I had good command early in the game. I had my control and composure and everything went well.' The Brooklyn Dodgers topped the Milwaukee Braves by the slimmest of margins, 7 to 6. The score was knotted at 6 after nine innings. Brooklyn won it in the 12th inning. After two were out Gino Cimoli drew a walk. Elmer Valo followed and he lashed a single. Roy Campanella then banged out a single giving Brooklyn the victory and sending the 11,792 home-town fans home happy. Both teams ended up with 13 on the afternoon. Clem Labine(3-2) got the win allowing no runs in 3 innings. Taylor Phillips(2-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. With this win, Brooklyn has a 32-19 record. They have been 7-3 lately. With the loss, Milwaukee has a record of 5-5 lately, 30-21 overall.
