Sanford(4-4) was in control of the game from the outset. He allowed just 6 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings. Chicago made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Dave Hillman(1-2) was the losing pitcher. The Philadelphia ballclub's record now stands at 20-27. Chicago has a record of 17-25 after the loss. MILWAUKEE AT PITTSBURGH Braves.......... 0 0 3 0 0 1 0 0 0 - 4 11 0 Pirates......... 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 2 8 1 Win:Spahn(6-3) Loss:Purkey(2-6) Homeruns- J.Adcock(7th) Eddie Mathews had 3 base hits and Warren Spahn went the distance at Forbes Field where the Milwaukee Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 4 to 2. In the top of the 3rd inning Milwaukee scored 3 runs with the help of 4 hits. That was all the offense they were to need. Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but Milwaukee was able to put down the rally. Spahn(6-3) got the victory, allowing 2 runs for the game. Bob Purkey(2-6) was tagged with the loss. 'We won because we did the little things right.' Fred Haney said after the game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get in close games we don't make mistakes.' ST. LOUIS AT NEW YORK Cardinals....... 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 3 0 - 4 8 0 Giants.......... 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 3 - 5 7 1 Win:Davis(2-1) Loss:Wilhelm(0-1) Homeruns- H.Sauer(11th) It was a great finish at Polo Grounds as the New York Giants pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 5 to 4. New York won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 3 runs using 2 hits. Hank Sauer led off and he drew a walk. Daryl Spencer struck out, unable to help the rally. Dusty Rhodes was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Andre Rodgers followed and he laced a base-knock. Ray Jablonski came to the plate and drew a walk to load the bases. Wes Westrum kept the inning going and stroked a single driving home two runs. Hoyt Wilhelm then threw a high and inside pitch that got by the catcher; it was ruled a passed ball making New York victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. New York had 7 hits for the night. The win was credited to Jim Davis(2-1) who went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs. Wilhelm(0-1) was the loser in relief. 'We just wouldn't give up,' Whitey Lockman said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans - they were with us the whole way.'
