Cincinnati took the lead for good in the 2nd inning when they scored 2 runs on 4 hits. That was all the offense they were to need. Cincinnati banged out 10 on the night. Gross(5-2), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Robin Roberts(3-7) was the loser. He pitched 8 innings allowing 9 hits and 2 walks. With this win, Cincinnati has a league leading 31-15 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With the loss Philadelphia now has a record of 19-27. New York drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning with 3 runs on 3 hits. Whitey Lockman led off the inning for New York when he drew a walk. Red Schoendienst came to the plate and grounded into a double play. Willie Mays then banged out a single. Hank Sauer followed and he laced a single. Daryl Spencer stepped into the box and drew a walk to load the bases. Dusty Rhodes kept the rally going and drew a walk scoring a run. Katt next to the plate and he delivered a base-hit adding another two runs to their total. Katt took second on the throw. The early run support proved sufficient for Ruben Gomez(5-7) and New York. That was all the run support Gomez required. Marv Grissom, after tossing a perfect ninth, was credited with his 5th save. Bob Buhl(6-3) was charged with the loss. He gave up 4 runs in 5 innings and saw his ERA jump from 2.42 to 2.75. ST.
