Philadelphia did all of it's offensive work in the 4th inning when they tallied 4 runs on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Stan Lopata who electrified Connie Mack Stadium when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 8th of the season). Philadelphia and Cincinnati each finished the night with 8 hits. The victory went to Haddix(1-5) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Brooks Lawrence(5-2) was charged with the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up 8 hits and 4 walks. Crone(2-3) had a strong outing. He surrendered only 8 hits and no walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 2.03. Milwaukee had 10 hits for the night. The loss was charged to Stu Miller(1-3). Milwaukee scored big getting 6 runs off him in 3 and 2/3 innings. ST. Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, St. Louis pulled the game out in the 18th inning. Eddie Kasko drew a walk. Lloyd Merritt stepped up next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Don Blasingame was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Al Dark followed and he laced a one-base hit scoring the run. Dark took second on the throw. St. Louis had a total of 18 hits for the game. Merritt(1-2) allowed no runs in 3 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Laurin Pepper(0-2) took the loss in relief. Fred Hutchinson was just happy to get a win, 'We've had such a bad streak of games -- boy, it's great to get the monkey off our back.
