Joe Margoneri(1-0) pitched a fine game. He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings improving his ERA from 2.81 to 2.59. Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but New York was able to put down the rally. Marv Grissom earned the save, his 4th. Luis Arroyo(3-1) was the losing pitcher. Bill Rigney was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.' ST. Milwaukee had 3 runs cross the plate in the 7th inning. The key offensive moment was provided by Juan Pizarro who made the crowd happy when he lofted a three-run bomb. St. Louis had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Pizarro(3-2) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Pizarro got relief help from Ernie Johnson who gained credit for his 5th save. Lindy McDaniel(0-5) was hit with the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up only 6 hits and no walks. 'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Fred Hutchinson 'But we have to get over it and get ready for the next game.' Harry Anderson helped send the fans home happy. He lashed a single knocking in a run in the 2nd inning, smacked a three-run homer (his 1st of the season) in the 6th inning and stroked a one-base hit in the 8th inning. Philadelphia banged out 9 on the night. Roberts(3-6) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Don Drysdale(4-1) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 6 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings and saw his ERA increase from 3.51 to 3.99. The Philadelphia ballclub's record now stands at 18-22. With the loss, the Brooklyn ballclub's record is 22-16.
