Gomez(3-3) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the St. Louis batters. He allowed just 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.40. New York had 15 hits for the night. Vinegar Bend Mizell(1-1) took the loss. 'I've been working on a few things in my delivery, and I think I'm hitting a good groove.' Gomez said after the game. 'I'm ready to start another game tomorrow!' The Philadelphia Phillies topped the Cincinnati Redlegs by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4. In the top of the 2nd inning Philadelphia scored 3 runs with the help of 3 hits. They would be enough to earn the win. Cincinnati threatened in the 9th but Philadelphia was able to put down the rally. Don Cardwell(2-1) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Cardwell was helped out by Turk Farrell who recorded his 2nd save. Warren Hacker(3-1) was the loser. 'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Cardwell, 'I was just giving us a chance to win.' Chicago came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Lee Walls led off and started the attack as he lashed a single. After an out was recorded, Walt Moryn stepped in and he slapped a single. Jim Bolger then stroked a one-base hit resulting in a run. Bobby Del Greco was up next and he doubled making Chicago the winners and sending the 7,362 fans home happy. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all. The win went to Elmer Singleton(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 1 inning. The loss was charged to Bob Purkey(1-3) in relief. 'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Bolger noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!' Brooklyn erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs. After an out was recorded, Gil Hodges began the rally when he drew a walk. Sandy Amoros got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Roy Campanella then reached on an error. Don Zimmer followed and he drew a walk to load the bases. Elmer Valo stepped into the box and stroked a one-base hit scoring two baserunners. Valo took second on the throw. The game was a scoreless duel until the 7th inning. Don Newcombe(4-1) allowed 2 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Clem Labine recorded the save, his 4th. Bob Buhl(3-1) suffered the loss. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 8 and 2/3 innings of work. After the game, it took a long while before Fred Haney emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the Brooklyn locker room.'
