Jeffcoat(4-1) escaped virtually unscathed against the Chicago hitters. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.58 to 2.70. The Chicago bats were silent in the bottom of the 9th. Don Kaiser(0-2) was tagged with the loss. He gave up 5 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings. 'Jeffcoat pitched a gem of a game', Bob Scheffing recounted. 'He kept our batters off balance the entire game.' The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Cincinnati won the game in the 11th inning. Roy McMillan drew a walk. Don Gross was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. After another out, Jerry Lynch came up and he doubled scoring the run. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times. Gross(2-0) got the win allowing 5 runs in 10 and 2/3 innings. Tom Acker gained credit for his 2nd save. Turk Lown(2-2) was hit with the loss in relief. Cincinnati continued on their recent roll, their winning streak now reaching 6 games and counting. 'We're running on all cylinders now', said Birdie Tebbetts. 'I probably shouldn't change a thing and let the guys continue to put up the wins.' MILWAUKEE AT ST. The crucial at-bat was provided by Sawatski who silenced Sportsman's Park as he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 2nd of the season). St. Louis had 16 hits in the game while Milwaukee had 13, but Milwaukee had the more timely hits. Taylor Phillips(2-0) allowed 2 runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. The loss was charged to Lloyd Merritt(0-2) in relief. He gave up 5 runs and 6 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings. Philadelphia had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Bob Purkey got the save, his 1st. The losing pitcher was Curt Simmons(2-2). Roberts(2-4) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn't allow much, just 9 hits and no walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.80 to 3.17. Both teams totaled 9 on the afternoon. Vern Law(0-2) was given the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 2 walks in 1 and 2/3 innings.
