NEWSPAPER GAME STORIES FOR 1957 National League Date: 5/8/1957

CHICAGO AT PITTSBURGH Cubs............ 0 1 0 2 0 0 0 0 1 - 4 10 1 Pirates......... 0 1 1 1 1 3 0 6 - 13 22 1 Win:Friend(2-3) Loss:Poholsky(0-2) Homeruns- D.Long(2nd) Bob Friend pitched a complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs by the score of 13 to 4 at Forbes Field. Pittsburgh jumped on top of Chicago in the 5th inning scoring a single run utilizing 3 base hits. Pittsburgh bats were very productive in the 8th inning with 6 runs on 7 hits. Offensively, Pittsburgh was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings. Friend(2-3) lasted until the end allowing 4 runs for the win. The loss was charged to Tom Poholsky(0-2). He was touched for 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. MILWAUKEE AT PHILADELPHIA Braves.......... 1 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 - 3 7 4 Phillies........ 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 - 4 6 0 Win:Roberts(1-4) Loss:Spahn(3-2) Homeruns- D.O'Connell(2nd), H.Aaron(6th) Stan Lopata had 2 base hits and Robin Roberts went the distance at Connie Mack Stadium as the Philadelphia Phillies came back dramatically to top the Milwaukee Braves by the score of 4 to 3. Philadelphia had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Lopata was the sparkplug when he banged out a single. Rip Repulski was next and he reached on an error. Chico Fernandez then slapped a one-base hit scoring a run. Ted Kazanski followed and he reached on an error. Richie Ashburn stepped into the box and drew a walk giving Philadelphia the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Philadelphia had only 6 hits for the night. Roberts(1-4) got the victory, allowing 3 runs for the game. Warren Spahn(3-2) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 walks. 'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Lopata noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!' ST. LOUIS AT NEW YORK Cardinals....... 0 0 0 1 1 0 1 1 0 - 4 11 1 Giants.......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 5 0 - 5 5 1 Win:Consuegra(1-0) Loss:Wehmeier(2-3) Homeruns- W.Moon(5th), H.Sauer(2nd) The New York Giants nipped the St. Louis Cardinals 5 to 4 at Polo Grounds in a hard fought contest. Sandy Consuegra(1-0) put in a pedestrian relief performance just good enough for the victory. He surrendered 7 hits and no walks in 4 innings. St. Louis threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Herm Wehmeier(2-3) took the loss. Fred Hutchinson was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!' CINCINNATI AT BROOKLYN Redlegs......... 0 4 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 - 6 10 0 Dodgers......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 - 2 6 2 Win:Jeffcoat(3-1) Loss:Podres(1-1) Homeruns- D.Snider(5th) Johnny Temple had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Ebbets Field as the Cincinnati Redlegs beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 6 to 2. Cincinnati brought 4 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning when they had 5 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Brooklyn was out-hit by Cincinnati, 10 hits to 6. Hal Jeffcoat(3-1) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Johnny Podres(1-1) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 9 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.
