The game started off with Cincinnati taking the lead in the first when they tallied 2 runs on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Pete Whisenant who deflated the crowd as he lashed a single which was good for two runs. Cincinnati ended up with 12 hits for the game while Philadelphia had 5. Brooks Lawrence(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and allowing 2 runs. Don Gross earned the save, his 2nd. Harvey Haddix(0-1) suffered the loss. He surrendered 12 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings. With this win, Cincinnati has a 8-4 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With the loss, the Philadelphia ballclub's record is 5-7. The game was deadlocked at 8 after nine full innings. St. Louis came out on top in the 10th inning. After two were out Al Dark keyed the rally when he singled. Musial stepped into the batter's box and he was hit by a pitch. Del Ennis then doubled bringing in two baserunners. St. Louis finished with 17 hits in the victory. The winning pitcher was Jones(2-0) who allowed 8 runs in 9 and 2/3 innings. Jones got help from Hoyt Wilhelm who was credited with his 2nd save. Roy Face(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 3 hits in 3 innings. 'Everything felt great' Jones said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody tonight.' Brooklyn came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Gilliam led off and started the attack as he stroked a one-base hit. Gino Cimoli was next and he reached on an error. Cimoli then reached on an error. Duke Snider followed and he drew a walk to load the bases. Carl Furillo stepped into the box and hit a sacrifice fly bringing in a run. Gil Hodges kept the inning going and banged out a single to load the bases. Charlie Neal next to the plate and he ripped a base-knock as another two runners scored. Chicago had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Don Bessent(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Clem Labine was credited with his 3rd save. The loss was charged to Jackie Collum(0-1) in relief.
