NEWSPAPER GAME STORIES FOR 1957 National League Date: 4/21/1957

CINCINNATI AT MILWAUKEE Redlegs......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 4 - 4 6 0 Braves.......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 - 1 7 0 Win:Lawrence(1-0) Loss:Crone(0-1) Save:Freeman(1st) Homeruns- S.Burgess(1st) In a dramatic ending the Cincinnati Redlegs staged a comeback and held on to win over the Milwaukee Braves by the count of 4 to 1. Cincinnati had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Smoky Burgess who quieted the home crowd when he rifled a three-run blast (his 1st of the season). The game was a scoreless duel until the 8th inning. Brooks Lawrence(1-0) allowed 1 run in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Lawrence got help from Hersh Freeman who was credited with his 1st save. Ray Crone(0-1) took the loss. He allowed 4 runs and 6 hits in 8 and 2/3 innings. After the game, it took a long while before Fred Haney emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this afternoon, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the Cincinnati locker room.' PHILADELPHIA AT NEW YORK Phillies........ 0 0 0 1 3 0 0 0 2 - 6 9 0 Giants.......... 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 2 0 - 4 7 0 Win:Miller(1-0) Loss:Grissom(0-1) Homeruns- C.Fernandez(1st) In a good matchup it was the Philadelphia Phillies 6, the New York Giants 4 at Polo Grounds. Philadelphia scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Richie Ashburn got things going when he stroked a one-base hit. Chico Fernandez stepped up to the plate and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Ed Bouchee then hit a single driving in a run. Rip Repulski came up and he doubled. Willie Jones came to the plate and would hit into a fielders choice scoring the final run of the inning. Philadelphia banged out 9 on the afternoon. Bob Miller(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. The losing pitcher was Marv Grissom(0-1) in relief. He surrendered 4 hits and no walks in 3 and 1/3 innings. PITTSBURGH AT BROOKLYN Pirates......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 4 - 7 10 0 Dodgers......... 0 2 2 0 0 0 2 0 0 - 6 12 1 Win:Purkey(1-0) Loss:Labine(1-1) Save:Face(1st) Homeruns- H.Foiles(1st), J.Powers(1st), R.Campanella(1st) In a dramatic ending the Pittsburgh Pirates staged a comeback and held on to win over the Brooklyn Dodgers by the count of 7 to 6. Pittsburgh had the game winning rally in the 9th inning when they tallied 4 runs on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by John Powers who disappointed the partisan crowd when he belted a three-run homer (his 1st of the season). Pittsburgh managed 10 in their victory. Bob Purkey(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing 2 runs. Purkey got relief help from Roy Face who gained credit for his 1st save. Clem Labine(1-1) was the loser in relief. By surrending 1 run in 2/3 of an inning his ERA jumped from 4.50 to 6.75. Walter Alston was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss. He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse, yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose. Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us this afternoon'
